Routes into Teaching in Scotland In Scotland teaching is an all graduate profession. All prospective teachers must complete an Initial Teacher Education (ITE) programme. If you do not already have a degree you will take the undergraduate route. If you have a degree you will take the graduate route. Option 1: Bachelor of Education (BEd)This is a four year course which enables you to teach in primary schools and some subjects in secondary schools e.g. Music, PE and Technological Education. Option 2: Concurrent or combined degreeThis enables you to do a degree in a subject of your choice and complete the ITE programme at the same time. Graduate Route
The Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) is usually a one year course which prepares those who already have a degree to teach in primary or secondary schools. More information can be found by following these links: Primary Teaching Applications for the PGDE are made through GTTR.
