"I think that my whole life up until I started my PGCE course was a preparation for teaching- the experiences that I had and the things that I learnt have helped me be the teacher that I am."

Nathan is in his sixth year of working as a primary school teacher. He has worked in Scotland and St Helena and currently teaches in Yorkshire. His main experience is with year 4 classes (8 year olds), but he has also taught PE and Games across the primary school. Here Nathan shares his thoughts on:

  • His calling to teach
  • The contribution that his Christian faith makes to his work as a teacher
  • The buzz of teaching

What is your story as to how you became a teacher?

I had always wanted to teach from the time I was about twelve (my father is a Maths teacher and always loved his work), I expected to teach History at a secondary school, but at university I helped run a Christian group in a primary school and I realized that God was calling me to work with primary age children. I think that my whole life up until I started my PGCE course was a preparation for teaching - the experiences that I had and the things that I learnt have helped me be the teacher that I am. As I believe God has directed my life since I was a baby there is no doubt in my mind that he has called me into this profession. If nothing else by giving me the desire to do the job.

What difference do you think being a Christian has made to the sort of teacher that you are?

On a general level I want to be a positive male role model at a time when there seem to be very few around. I have been told by a number of parents how they have noticed their children's self-esteem increase during the time they have been in my class. I know that I am unconditionally loved by God and I try to unconditionally love every child that I teach. I think it has made me a better listener and more patient with the children.

What gives you a buzz about being in teaching?

Every day is a buzz - the best moment is when you see the eyes of a child light up with understanding and you know that you have increased their knowledge of the world. Religious Studies in the period leading up to Easter is great; I can tell the Easter story and the children hang onto every word - it is the most exciting story in the world.

What would you say to a Christian who was thinking about going into teaching?

You have to love children and love being with them. Teaching is not ultimately about exam results; it is about sharing your love of the world with children so that they love it too. If you are not fully committed don't do it - children deserve the best.
